Looking for/looking after our mining past

These are two different landscapes, two different places but a shared past, defined by the mine during the 19th and the 20th centuries. Even if the landscape is forever marked by the mine activities, this history is slowly erased from the share memory, as the new generation doesn’t have a direct experience of the mine, having known only the traces left by the mining.  The centenary of Courrière catastrophe and the strikes that followed in Lens in 2006 and the centenary of the Seriphos strike last year are milestones in the history of these places and a time to consider how to promote this heritage. In Lens, the whole mining area has been inscribed in 2012 on the Unesco World Heritage list, in Serifos there is several projects of heritage promotion of the mining past. The idea of these project is to make our students looking for the mining past of their home to share it with their European counterpart, inciting them to think about the similarities of their history and to know better their own history.
